Savona is a fascinating port city, rich in history, whose architectural and artistic events are linked to the history of the wealthy Della Rovere family (of which two components even became popes).
The medieval center is the point of greatest tourist interest.
Not far from the port stands the fortress of Priamar, dating back to the 16th century, and a series of towers that cannot be missing in an ancient sea fortress, such as the “Torretta” also called Torre Leon Pancaldo, the Torre del Brandale, in the heart of the old town, the Torre dei Corsi, the Guarnero, and the Torre Pancalda.
A mention also for the wealth of churches, among which the Sistine Chapel stands out, so named in honor of Pope Sixtus and unique to share the same name as the most famous one in Rome, and the Cathedral of the Assumption.
Among ancient churches, historic buildings and art works such as Palazzo delle Piane, a masterpiece of the Italian Liberty style, tourists certainly have something to be satisfied about. But Savona is also a modern city, with a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars.
